What do you do when you have a dream? Do you just keep on dreaming, or do you sit down and try to figure out how to make it a reality? Where do you begin? What will be that "golden moment" that tells you to go for it, do it, make it happen, and don't stop no matter what people say?
My moment came when I was sitting at my computer late at night, working on my idea for our first site, iPatioUmbrella.com, and getting that "this will never happen" feeling, when my father walked up behind me to check out what I was doing on the computer. Having worked in the outdoor casual industry for ten years, as well as a graphic designer and marketing consultant (a darn good one in fact,) I wanted to create a business based on the things I believed in, like quality and craftsmanship, good service, listening to people and helping them get what they wanted, and doing it for a fair price. But I was having my moments of doubt, wondering what one person can do in a sea of giant retailers.
"So, is this what you've been working on?" he asked me in Spanish.
"Yeah, I guess.." was my answer. My personal doubts were starting to get to me.
My father was always very caring, very loving and ready with the hugs and kisses for the family, but he wasn't the most talkative guy in the world. When he did have something to say, it was important and to the point. He always considered his words carefully.
"Do you think you can be a success at this?" he asked me. This wasn't regular conversation. He looked at me straight in the eyes and wanted to know if I had it in me. That question sparkled with meaning. I had to answer the way I felt.
"Yes, I do." I said.
"Then do it. Don't let anything stop you. I have faith in you."
Those words from my father were what I needed to hear. I know and love the industry I'm in. I know how to make and sell good products, and I know how to service my customer professionally. I knew I was going to be the best I could be, and I wasn't going to let anyone tell me I couldn't do this. This was the golden moment that I was looking for that would take me on this long journey of starting a business and becoming a success.
Those were the last words I heard my father tell me concerning the business. He passed away just before I opened this website up. That's why I've put every amount of love and professionalism into our little online shop. Now, 7 years later and I'm married and have my own family, my wife and I have put our hearts and souls into making iPatioUmbrella.com the best we can. We've dedicated ourselves to creating not only great outdoor products, but creating a great experience as well.
From our family to yours, thank you for your patronage, and thank you for choosing iPatioUmbrella.com
